Technology
has affected our way of life in a negative way. Although technology has
brought upon many positives to today’s way of living, technology has
also brought upon a couple negatives such as make people lazier and
dumber. Everyone, especially consumers of technology, should pay
attention to the negatives that technology can bring towards today's way
of living. To support this position, Nicholas Carr from The Atlantic
states that technology has affected the way he reads in a negative way.
As a matter of fact, Carr finds that technology has not only affected
his way of reading, but technology has affected the way many people
today read. Tim Wu from The New York Times also argues that technology
has brought upon some negatives. Wu makes a connection between improving
technologies and increased diseases. Technology has made people today
lazier and somewhat dumber because technology has made everything
easier for everyone. People should pay attention because if society
keeps relying heavily on technology, our society will get dumber and
lazier.
In Nicholas Carr’s article “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, Carr brings up the issue that technology has affected his way of reading in a negative way. Carr states, “…Net seems to be doing is chipping away my capacity for concentration and contemplation. My mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles.” (Carr 1) Carr also finds that he is not the only one having this negative effect. Carr finds that blogger Bruce Friedman also has had trouble. Carr quotes Friedman say, “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb a longish article on the web or in print.”(Carr 1) Carr argues that the distractions and knowledge the Internet brings has made society dumber.
Tim Wu from The New York Times also argues that technology has brought many negative effects . Wu states in article “As Technology Gets Better, Will Society Get Worse?”, “Since the arrival of new technologies, the population has suffered a massive increase in morbid obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes.” (Wu 1) Along with the negative effect on health, Wu goes on to state the negative effect technology has on social problems. Wu states, •Social problems are rampant: idleness, alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide have reached some of the highest levels on Earth.” (Wu 1) Wu does a good job of presenting the negative effects technology can have on health and socially.
Technology has not only made today’s society dumber and lazier, but it has also affected people’s health and social behavior in a negative way. Nicholas Carr from The Atlantic does a good job presenting and showing that technology has affected the way people read in a wagging way. Tim Wu from The New York Times does a good job showing the negative effects technology can have on an individual's health and social behavior. It is important to pay attention to these negatives because society has relied heavily on technology today, and these negative effects have become a reality to many people. If society keeps relying on technology as heavily as today, these health risks will keep increasing and our society will keep getting dumber and lazier. People have to start taking initiative on their own and stop relying on technology.
