Immigration
The United States should not give amnesty to illegal immigrants that are moving and increasing the population in the United States. The United States cannot afford to give amnesty to illegal immigrants that are moving into the United States because they are making the job market more competitive and could cost the country a lot of money. President Obama, all U.S. Politicians and all Americans should recognize the possible negative effects to the United States in granting amnesty to illegal immigrants. According to Ed Butowsky from Fox News, granting amnesty to illegal immigrants into the United States is something that America cannot afford. Nicholas Kristof from The New York Times, argues immigration can lead to many positive things in the United States, for example illegal workers with work permits can contribute money into the payroll taxes to the United States. Giving amnesty to illegal immigrants is not a good idea because it will cost the United States a lot of money and will make the job market very difficult because of scarcity of jobs. Granting amnesty to illegal immigrants can make it more difficult for many Americans to get a job and could increase the financial burden for the United States.
Ed Butowsky, a journalist for Fox News, argues that President Obama’s idea of giving amnesty illegal immigrants into our country is not a good idea. Butowsky argues that giving amnesty to illegal immigrants into the United States will cost the country a lot of money and bury the country into an even deeper financial burden. Butowsky states, “…each illegal immigrant costs our country $24,000 a year. But, on average, each pays $10,000 in taxes, so it’s reasonable to say that each illegal really adds $14,000 a year to our country’s debt burden.”(Butowsky, 1) Butowsky then adds on, “Now multiply that $14,000 by the 5 million illegal immigrants we might grant amnesty, and we’re out a mere $70 billion.”(Butwosky, 1) Having a national debt of 18 trillion already, it would not be smart for the United States to agree on giving amnesty to illegal immigrants into our country because it would just make our financial burden worse than it already is.
Also, giving amnesty to illegal immigrants into the United States is not a good idea because illegal immigrants will make the job market tougher than what it already is. Ed Butwosky states, “So how many new jobs do we need to create to offset the $70 billion we’ll have to pay if the president grants amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants? Divide 70 billion by 12, 500 and you get…5.6 million new full-time jobs...Is this possible? Sadly no.”(Butowsky, 1) There just aren’t enough jobs in the United States to satisfy the amount of people the United States will contain if the country grants amnesty to illegal immigrants. Not enough jobs lead to an increase of unemployment, which leads to an increase of poverty.
However, Nicholas Kristof from The New York Times argues that immigration can lead to many positives for the United States. Kristof first addresses the argument that illegals are “parasites”. Kristof states, “At the state and local level, households headed by unauthorized immigrants paid $11 billion in taxes in 2010 alone. If these migrants are given work permits and brought into the system, they will contribute $45 billion over five years in payroll taxes to the United States economy.”(Kristof, 1) Kristof then addresses the belief that immigrants threaten our way of life by saying that immigration has hugely enriched our country and then states, “Nations, like carpets, benefit from multiple kinds of threads...” (Kristof, 1)
It is important for Americans to see and realize the positives and negatives in granting amnesty to illegal immigrants into the United States. It is important for Americans to realize by giving amnesty to illegal immigrants; it will cost the United States a lot of money and will make the job market very difficult because of scarcity of jobs. It’s important to realize this because Americans themselves will be affected both negatively and positively by the illegal immigrants coming into our country.
