Immigration
The United States should not give amnesty to illegal immigrants that are moving and increasing the population in the United States. The United States cannot afford to give amnesty to illegal immigrants that are moving into the United States because they are making the job market more competitive and could cost the country a lot of money. President Obama, all U.S. Politicians and all Americans should recognize the possible negative effects to the United States in granting amnesty to illegal immigrants. According to Ed Butowsky from Fox News, granting amnesty to illegal immigrants into the United States is something that America cannot afford. Nicholas Kristof from The New York Times, argues immigration can lead to many positive things in the United States, for example illegal workers with work permits can contribute money into the payroll taxes to the United States. Giving amnesty to illegal immigrants is not a good idea because it will cost the United States a lot of money and will make the job market very difficult because of scarcity of jobs. Granting amnesty to illegal immigrants can make it more difficult for many Americans to get a job and could increase the financial burden for the United States.
Ed Butowsky, a journalist for Fox News, argues that President Obama’s idea of giving amnesty illegal immigrants into our country is not a good idea. Butowsky argues that giving amnesty to illegal immigrants into the United States will cost the country a lot of money and bury the country into an even deeper financial burden. Butowsky states, “…each illegal immigrant costs our country $24,000 a year. But, on average, each pays $10,000 in taxes, so it’s reasonable to say that each illegal really adds $14,000 a year to our country’s debt burden.”(Butowsky, 1) Butowsky then adds on, “Now multiply that $14,000 by the 5 million illegal immigrants we might grant amnesty, and we’re out a mere $70 billion.”(Butwosky, 1) Having a national debt of 18 trillion already, it would not be smart for the United States to agree on giving amnesty to illegal immigrants into our country because it would just make our financial burden worse than it already is.
Also, giving amnesty to illegal immigrants into the United States is not a good idea because illegal immigrants will make the job market tougher than what it already is. Ed Butwosky states, “So how many new jobs do we need to create to offset the $70 billion we’ll have to pay if the president grants amnesty to 5 million illegal immigrants? Divide 70 billion by 12, 500 and you get…5.6 million new full-time jobs...Is this possible? Sadly no.”(Butowsky, 1) There just aren’t enough jobs in the United States to satisfy the amount of people the United States will contain if the country grants amnesty to illegal immigrants. Not enough jobs lead to an increase of unemployment, which leads to an increase of poverty.
However, Nicholas Kristof from The New York Times argues that immigration can lead to many positives for the United States. Kristof first addresses the argument that illegals are “parasites”. Kristof states, “At the state and local level, households headed by unauthorized immigrants paid $11 billion in taxes in 2010 alone. If these migrants are given work permits and brought into the system, they will contribute $45 billion over five years in payroll taxes to the United States economy.”(Kristof, 1) Kristof then addresses the belief that immigrants threaten our way of life by saying that immigration has hugely enriched our country and then states, “Nations, like carpets, benefit from multiple kinds of threads...” (Kristof, 1)
It is important for Americans to see and realize the positives and negatives in granting amnesty to illegal immigrants into the United States. It is important for Americans to realize by giving amnesty to illegal immigrants; it will cost the United States a lot of money and will make the job market very difficult because of scarcity of jobs. It’s important to realize this because Americans themselves will be affected both negatively and positively by the illegal immigrants coming into our country.

It's great how you focus not only on one side, but both. You show the readers that immigrants can cost the nation more money than save money. Although you make some persuasive points, it's probably recommended to use other arguments rather than money. Try to explain how bringing in immigrants will affect our population and why politicians want them out of our country. The evidence that you use with Butowsky is a great way to show your readers the cost in giving amnesty to illegal aliens. Also, it's great that you use Kristof's evidence to give the reader another point of view.
ReplyDeleteYour claims are true, it will cost the United States a sum amount of money. If they were to be amnestied it will create competition and make it even more difficult for a born citizen to find a job. It would have been nice if you could of fine a source that provided an alternate solution that would have at least help them. If you were not to amnestied them, then it will cost money to deport them, and if so we are back to square one. Yes it will cost money to amnesty them, but the point of amnestying them is to gain money in the end. However, if by amnestying creates more burdens, then sure do not amnesty immigrants but at least there should be some type of alternate solution.

ReplyDeleteMoney will always be an issue in the immigration debate. Both sides include money as a reason to support or oppose immigration. This argument did a good job of including other reasons to oppose amnesty besides money. Jobs will be more competitive, but not with current jobs some citizens are not interested in. Those are the jobs a lot of immigrants will be glad to take. It is true that the lack of jobs increases unemployment, and unemployment is already a big problem for this country. This argument really stresses the importance of this topic.
DeleteThey are advantages and disadvantages in giving amnesty to immigrants. Money will always be the main issue. Not to mention overpopulation. Which is why so many citizens oppose this issue. Your argument is very clear, ethical, and logical. Its great how you focus and explain both sides of opposing views.
ReplyDeleteGreat decision to have both sides in your essay. Your essay was clear and precise on your stand on illegal immigration. However, adding many quotes from the articles feels like a summary of the articles. Additionally, incorporate more of your own thoughts and ideas. You touched the main points on why amnesty isn't or is beneficial but what else. Subsequently, ending your essay with the main points you said in your body paragraph is repetitive.
ReplyDeleteYour argument did a good job on stating the pros and cons of giving illegal immigrants amnesty, but your argument can be counter argued by saying that America currently had a high demand for low wage workers so giving illegal immigrants amnesty and the right to work will fulfill our countries need for low wage workers.
ReplyDeleteYou did a good job to show why America should not give amnesty to undocumented immigrants. Nevertheless, you didn't really offer a solution to the 11-12 million immigrants living in the country. If America doesn't grant amnesty to immigrants like you've stated, then we'll be in the exact same situation we're in. Hence, you need to state what we have to do to heal the financial burdens these undocumented immigrants make.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on explaining both pro and cons. Money will definitely be an issue as well as population. Also, it may also make the job market more difficult than it already is. The best thing to do is create more jobs. Of course is going to cost more money but there's a chance to make more than what is being made now.
ReplyDeleteyour argument was very strong and great job on including both sides of the argument. You provided a great amount of evidence to better help support your claims. You went into depth in explaining the pros and cons of giving amnesty to undocumented immigrants
ReplyDeleteMoney, yes it is important, but money is just paper. The illegal immigrants, they are people, like every other citizen and resident of the United States. Amnesty costs a lot of money, but so does deportation, it still adds to the huge deb this country is in, which is a downside. No matter if it is amnesty or deportation, the debt will increase by the billions. If finding a job is really so difficult, then why is there plenty of open seats in the jobs that no american citizen wants, other than an immigrant who is willing to work hard, there is no one else that will want to be out in the fields cultivating or harvesting the land for farming in huge plantations.
ReplyDeleteMoney is important, but what else would granting amnesty do to our country? you had stated that granting amnesty would add to our national debt, but used a statistics solely based on illegal immigrants. Each of These illegal immigrants do add $14000 to the national debt, but what happens if theyre granted amnesty? Does this number change?
ReplyDeleteThe pro side of the argument is addressed but is not developed. Granting amnesty will contribute to the American economy as the New York Times post showed, however, the argument above simply paste the information without counterargument it if the author is against legalization. Everyone knows that illegal immigrants are a serious competition to Americans, yet very little acknowledge taht they are such a big theat to this labor force because etehy actually take jobs without medical benefits, vacations, paid sick days, and for lower wages. Not many Americans will settle for this conditions and that is why illegal immigrants are as strong labor option fro greedy and ambitious business owners. Amnesty is need to compensate and support this people that contribute with so much to a nation taht gives them so much less.
ReplyDeleteWhile i can agree that it maybe be a little difficult to create more jobs, Illegal immigrants go for jobs that are low skilled and low paying. So what competition is there really?! Undocumented immigrants take the jobs that nobody else will because they are desperate for change and they have no education to get anything else but low skilled jobs. The only competition is that amongst other illegal immigrants who need jobs. Americans and immigrants don't go for the same type of jobs so there is no way that they are competing for jobs. Creating jobs and fighting for those that already exist are two different issues. Creating them is one but competing for them is not.
